Change the landscape every day, eat well almost without looking for it and travel without rush while connecting with the surroundings. Taking a camper route through northern Spain is all about that: it’s about driving without schedules and stopping when something catches your attention, letting the destination mark your path.

Cantabria, Asturias, and the Basque Country make the perfect route to travel on wheels. Green mountains, villages full of character, and wild beaches await you at the end of a road. Here we leave you some stop ideas to inspire your camper or motorhome route through northern Spain.

The charm of traveling in a camper or motorhome through the north

Traveling the north of Spain in a caravan or camper is one of the most comfortable and flexible ways to get to know the area. You take everything with you, you can decide on the go, and you have the freedom to change plans whenever you want. Traveling this way allows for a better connection with each place and enjoy the journey without the feeling of rushing.

These are some of our favorite destinations for a camper route through the north of Spain.

Basque Country

The Basque Country is a must-stop and an excellent starting point for your route through the north. San Sebastián combines like few city destinations, nature, and good gastronomy. Stroll along the bay of La Concha, get lost in the streets of the Old Town, and create your own route of pintxos

A few kilometers away, Getaria offers a slightly different plan, more tranquil and very linked to the sea. This small coastal village invites you to discover its history and taste its famous txakoli (white wine) while enjoying the views.

Cantabria

After the Basque Country, you cannot miss Cantabria. Santillana del Mar is one of its most well-known towns, with a very well-preserved medieval past. Very close by are the Altamira Caves, a highly recommended visit to understand the region's ancient past.

From there, the more adventurous cannot miss the Peaks of Europe. The landscape changes completely with imposing mountains and open valleys, featuring a huge variety of hiking trails for all levels. It is a perfect environment to disconnect, walk, and enjoy the north in its purest form.

Asturias

Asturias fits perfectly into your route in a camper in northern Spain thanks to the variety of plans you will find within a few kilometers. Gijón is an ideal option for an urban stop: a very lively city with a great number of cultural activities and where you will eat wonderfully. The Lagos de Covadonga gift you one of the most spectacular landscapes of the trip.

Cudillero is a perfect stop to conclude the route (or start it, depending on your itinerary). Colorful houses, steep streets, and a genuine maritime atmosphere. A destination to slow down, eat well, and relax.

Plan your route in a camper through the north

Although traveling in a camper invites improvisation, there are those who prefer to have a general idea of the route. Spending at least a couple of days in each area will help you enjoy without rush and avoid spending all your time on the road. The climate of the north can change quickly, so it's advisable to check the forecast before planning outdoor activities.

Choosing where to sleep well also makes a difference on a camper trip. Quiet, well-equipped spaces in contact with nature make the experience complete.
